Why Lion Corner?

Strange name? Actually not. Lion Corner Tavern was formally known as Lion Corner Coffee Bar and has quite a history. We decided to keep the name, or part of it because it was already known in the area. Why the Lion? Well on the corner right opposite us used to be the old Lion Match Factory. Therefore Lion Corner.

In the early 1920s the Lion Match Company built a group of very large industrial buildings in Observatory all in the grand and imposing style of the times. These happily survived the century and have now been converted to provide an ultra modern office complex but with the character and the feeling of comfort that only a mature patina can bring.
